Appreciate yourself

I have a very good friend. She is that one friend that just seems to understand. She seems to get it, even when I don’t. And she sent me a book the other day. But it wasn’t just a plain book, it had little notes and cute annotations in it. And I instantly fell in love, because who doesn’t love something sentimental, right? And then I turned the page, it fell upon a certain section, there I saw that two words were underlined. Two random words off of the page were neatly underlined in pink ballpoint pen. Appreciate yourself.

It’s not even like I tell her everything. I don’t tell her how much I truly dislike myself, yet she seems to sense it anyway. Appreciate yourself. They say that in life, small things happen to you. Small things that have a big impact, and those two underlined words, struck me right in the heart. because it reminded me, that somebody cares. And that maybe, I should listen to what that somebody was saying.

I think as life goes on we learn to critique ourselves more and more. Our society is a harsh one, but we made it this way. You just have to learn to escape this society, even if we made it ourselves, even if it’s just for a little while. You have to look beyond what is deemed as right, because often what we are told is right is utterly wrong, life does not fit a mark scheme.

I see it so much, in the way people talk, the way they move, the way they act. It is everywhere. We have to stop and think about what we are doing, we care so much about appearance and the way that we are seen by others that we have learnt to appreciate the version of us that they want to see. And we shouldn’t, I shouldn’t. And its true. I need to appreciate me.

And so do you. Life is short, very short. And time flies by quick. We need to stop obsessing with this thing called ‘ beauty’ and this thing called ‘ perfection’. Because beauty and perfection are natural things. They are whatever you make them. Beauty cannot be made, beauty is already there. Everywhere, including in you.

Life is a thing that should be appreciated. Life is tough, I get that. And life is often shit, I get that. But life is also full of so many wonderful things. Sometimes it take a while to find those things, but trust me, they are there. We often appreciate many things in life, we appreciate scenery. We appreciate other people’s appearance. We appreciate family. We appreciate friends. We appreciate education. We appreciate celebrities, and literature, and nature. We often appreciate these things. And it is so good to be appreciative of these things, because we often take them for granted. But something else we often take for granted, is the beauty of living.

And it is hypocritical for me to say, because honestly, I am probably the worse at it. But we need to realise that we will never be anybody else. We are here is the world, being us. We cannot change that. You cannot change the fact that you are you. You can only change the way you feel about the fact that you are you, and that ‘you’ are living.

So here are your underlined words. Neatly highlighted in pink ball point pen. Because I know you need them, we all do. Appreciate yourself.

Thank you so much for reading.

  1. Lovely post, as always :). I stumbled on a quote that reminded me of this… “Be yourself because an original is worth more than a copy.” That rang so true to me & I just wanted to share it with you :).

  2. This is such a lovely post – and your friend sounds so lovely too. I agree with all of this – I feel like the way society is has changed me to become a person who is fearful of other people’s thoughts and attention, but this post is definitely something I need to remember in those situations. I’m glad I’m not the only one who is observant about these things 🙂

  3. Wow that was an amazing post 😀 Thats awesome. Appreciate myself ^^ You know, this year i’ve changed. I don’t talk, i don’t have best friends and i’m used to it, I don’t mind. And i’m more observant and thinky than eveer. I see how people feel. Their eyes, the way they speak, their expressions. It’s amazing ^^ I can guess what they’re doing, why they are saying something and if they mean something else, what they are thinking. Idk how. I can guess a lot but it makes sense… I can’t describe it. Obviously I can’t read a person and judge them and stuff. But it’s really cool. Anyways, thanks, this post really cheered me up ^^
